VOBIS Gold success for Rough Justice

Mar 10, 2016

A new test brought a terrific result for Rough Justice in the VOBIS Gold Eldorado (1300m) at Wangaratta.

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra had never run Rough Justice past 1200m but the gelding handled his first examination at 1300m with aplomb.

Ellerton and Zahra had to wait see Rough Justice in action over the 1300m after the race was postponed from the previous Sunday after a power failure brought an end to the meeting.

Damian Lane travelled to Wangaratta to partner the son of Wanted in the $70,000 contest and the Group I-winning rider gave Rough Justice the perfect run despite drawing barrier seven.

Lane parked Rough Justice behind the speed, biding his time until the field rounded the home turn before asking him to make his run at the 300m.

The leader Kirani had things his way until early in the straight but Rough Justice gave plenty under Lane’s riding in the last 200m to nab the front runner on the line to score by a half-head.

“The race wasn’t run to suit him with the leader having such an easy time of it up front but the way he finished it off to win was terrific,” Zahra said.

“We’d never really tried him past 1200m but he’s been relaxing well in his work so we were confident he’d get the 1300m and he did it really well.

“Damian gave him a really good ride but the horse tries so hard and he deserved another win.”

Rough Justice’s latest success was his sixth from 20 starts while the $59,000 in prizemoney and bonuses took his earnings to more than $450,000.

Congratulations to Rough Justice’s owners and all involved with his latest victory.
