Sword lights up Caulfield on Australia Day
Jan 27, 2016
Sword Of Light could make a late bid for glory for the Group I Blue Diamond Stakes with her strong win in Tuesday's fillies' edition of the Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Caulfield.
Sword Of Light's managing owner David Moodie has until February 23 to decide whether to pay the $55,000 late entry free to run the unbeaten filly in the Blue Diamond Stakes on February 27.
Moodie paid a $150,000 late entry fee before Crystal Lily won the 2010 Golden Slipper while Sword Of Light earned $90,000 for her win in the Group 3 feature.
The daughter of New Approach could have earned another significant cheque had she not played up in in the barriers, forcing her withdrawal from a race at Flemington on New Year's Day.
However, jockey Damian Lane reported Sword Of Light ($6.50) behaved well in the barriers before she dashed home from behind the speed add a stakes win to her outstanding debut victory at Echuca on December 17.
"She's an improving sort of filly and she's very green so I think there's a bit more in the tank,” Lane said.
"She's a flighty filly full stop. She was a bit hesitant in the barriers but she was a lot better in there today, which was our main concern.
"Hopefully she keeps improving and learns to cool her head a little bit.”
Mathew Ellerton, who trains Sword Of Light in partnership with Simon Zahra, said the youngster coped with the occasion better in the mounting yard before her win but she has always displayed similar behavioural attributes to her well-performed dam Joyeuse.
"I don't know how good she is at this stage because she just hasn't had the exposure to pressure,” Ellerton said.
"She is the spitting image of her mum, she was very hard to handle in the barriers. She wore a barrier blanket and she was hard to do anything with.
"She was chalk and cheese than what she was at Flemington so that was pleasing.”
Ellerton said Sword Of Light would almost certainly run in the Group II Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield in a fortnight's time.
Congratulations to Sword Of Light's owners and all involved with her dynamic Caulfield victory.
