Tempered makes it an Echuca treble for Ellerton Zahra
Dec 17, 2015
A solid city outing was always going to leave Tempered in a prime position to break his maiden at Echuca.
Tempered finished second in a slowly-run race at Sandown at December 2 before stepping up to 1400m in the National Jockeys Trust Plate at Echuca, in which the promising performer completed a treble at the meeting for Ellerton Zahra Racing.
Drawing the outside barrier in the 11-horse field but the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained galloper was able to overcome that problem with the aid of in-form jockey Damian Lane.
Lane let Tempered stride forward to race handy to the lead before the gelding began to roll into the race from the 500m, staking his claim rounding the home turn.
Tempered’s quality shone through in the straight as Lane guided him to a comfortable 1 ¼-length win.
“His two runs this prep were excellent so were pretty confident he would be able to get the job done here,” Zahra said.
“He enjoyed getting up a little bit in distance to the 1400m here and he was too strong for them in the straight.
“He might be able to get out to a mile this time in but he’s a nice horse with good potential.”
Tempered’s breakthrough victory earned connections $18,950 in prizemoney and Super VOBIS bonuses, taking his stakes tally to more than $25,000.
Congratulations to Tempered’s owners and breeders Contract Racing on another win in partnership with Ellerton Zahra Racing.
