Siding springs to another win at Sandown

Dec 09, 2015

Exciting galloper Siding Spring continued his charge through the grades with a dominant maiden city win on the Sandown Hillside track.

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra have been patient with the son of Starcraft, who has repaid his handling with a pair of emphatic victories.

Siding Spring, who is out of the stable’s former Group performer Red Flair, scored a strong maiden win at Pakenham on November 29 before stepping up to Benchmark 70 company for The Wolf’s Season’s Greetings Handicap (1600m).

Damian Lane piloted Olafsson and Moparee to wins for Ellerton Zahra Racing before producing a confident ride on Siding Spring in the $40,000 contest.

Lane let the chestnut gelding stalk the leader until Siding Spring ambled up to join the front-runner 300m from home.

Siding Spring showed a terrific turn of foot once Lane asked him for an effort before drawing away to win by 3 ¼ lengths at his first attempt at 1600m.

“That was even more impressive than his maiden win,” Zahra said.

“He really enjoyed the longer trip. The mile was perfect for him and he won like a pretty smart horse.

“He began well and is able to race close to the speed without having to be pushed and he’s got a nice little turn of foot, which will only help him as he gets out in distance.”

Siding Spring’s classy win gave him a second victory in six starts while the $29,000 winner’s prize took his earnings to more than $50,000.

Congratulations to Siding Spring’s owners – great stable supporters Contract Racing and the Psaltis family – on another victory in partnership with Ellerton Zahra Racing.
