Zoutori zooms to Bobbie Lewis Quality triumph
Sep 14, 2019
Taking the harder option produced a great result when Zoutori landed the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington.
Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra considered running Zoutori first-up in an open sprint but decided to tackle the Group 2 contest after a look at the nominations for the $200,000 race.
Zoutori had 53kg under the Quality handicap conditions of the event while the son of Zoustar’s chances increased when he drew the favoured outside section of the Straight Six course.
Ellerton and Zahra booked the prolific winner Linda Meech, who duly guided the emerging galloper to a dominant two-length win.
Zoutori was unplaced in two runs in Group company during the Brisbane autumn carnival but was far from disgraced. Ellerton said little went right for the gelding on that trip/
"Things went a bit pear-shaped for him in the last campaign," Ellerton said.
"We took him to Brisbane and it was pretty fruitless so it's good to pick up the pieces today.
"He just didn't handle the right-handed way of going (in Brisbane).
“I thought he ran well enough in his first run up there and then Craig Williams just said he wanted to turn left the whole way up there in his next start.
"He may well also not be a miler."
Ellerton said Zoutori could return to the Flemington straight course for the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) in October.
Zoutori’s win was his fifth in 14 starts while the $120,000 winner’s cheque took his stakes tally to more than $340,000.
Congratulations to Zoutori’s thrilled owners and all involved in yet another Group success for Ellerton Zahra Racing.
