Tommy gets on the board at his first ride for EZR

Japanese apprentice Akatsuki Tomita made a huge impression when he posted a win with his first Australian ride at Wangaratta.
Tomita, who has quickly become known as ‘Tommy’ around the Ellerton Zahra Racing stable, headed to Wangaratta for two rides to start his Australian career a week after arriving from Japan.
Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra gave Tomita the chance to notch his maiden Australian win on Darmasun in the Butler’s Pantry Rating 58 Handicap (1300m) and the young rider didn’t disappoint.
Tomita had an early taste of tight Australian riding before settling Darmasun midfield until the home turn.
Tomita had to negotiate a tricky passage inside the tiring leader at the 250m but Darmasun responded to the jockey’s urgings, driving up along the rail to score narrowly.
“It was a great ride because not a lot went Tommy’s way,” Zahra said.
“He copped a bit of buffering early in the race but the way he went for the inside run to give the horse every chance to win the race was terrific.
“Darmasun really responded when Tommy asked him for an effort in the straight so he did a great job at his first ride here.”
Congratulations to Tommy and Darmasun’s owners on their thrilling win at Wangaratta.
