EZR quinella with smart three-year-olds at Bendigo

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra had three of the seven runners and went close to producing the trifecta in the Bendigo Marketplace Maiden (1300m).

Ellerton Zahra Racing sent Brilliant Venture, Chivargo and The Last Warrior to the $35,000 race and took first, second and fourth placings in a terrific performance by the stable.

Chivargo got home by a neck over the fast-finishing Brilliant Venture but Brilliant Venture’s jockey Linda Meech had a look at the stewards’ footage of the pair bumping on the home turn before deciding against lodging a protest.

Chivargo came from last to claim her maiden victory after the Deep Field filly made a solid start to her career at the same track on July 28.

Zahra said Chivargo still had plenty of improvement in her despite claiming her maiden at only her second start.

“She got to the front and floated a bit but she got the job done and on this heavy track, it’s a bit of an unknown with these sorts of horses,” Zahra said.

“She is a backward filly. She might head to the paddock shortly and be a nice autumn horse.

“She just continues to grow and her coat still doesn’t look right so she might be a nice filly in the autumn with a bit of spring sun on her back.”

Brilliant Venture continues to develop in his second racing preparation with his unlucky second.

The son of Zacinto finished fifth behind subsequent city winner Acting and Condo’s Express at Tatura first-up before his excellent second at Bendigo.

“He’s a nice horse but he’s still learning what it’s all about,” Zahra said.

The Last Warrior was far from disgraced, finished three lengths from the promising duo at only his second start.
