Blinkers help La Volt to a breakthough win at Cranbourne
May 17, 2019
Blinkers produced an amazing turnaround in La Volt’s form at Cranbourne.
La Volt won two of his first six starts but broke a winning drought that stretched back to December 2016 with his bold front-running win in the Mercedes-Benz Mornington BM64 Handicap (1600m).
Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra decided to add blinkers to La Volt’s gear for the Cranbourne race after a steady fifth at the same track on May 3 while engaging Chris Symons to ride the son of Charge Forward.
La Volt wanted to over-race for Symons in the early stages before the jockey let the five-year-old work to the early lead.
La Volt did plenty wrong but led throughout to score a deserved 1 ¼ length win.
“He’s been disappointing this campaign but blinkers on tonight probably made the difference,” Symons said.
“There was no plan. I just gave him a dig (early) and he did the rest.
“He literally took off on me the whole race. I just sat there and he won – great.
“I just tried to get him into a rhythm and he did the rest. He did a good job.”
La Volt’s breakthrough win was his third in 22 starts while the $19,250 winner’s cheque took his stakes tally to a shade short of $100,000.
Congratulations to La Volt’s extremely patient owners and all involved with his terrific Cranbourne success.
