Durendal dominates at Ballarat

Nov 21, 2015

Durendal improved off a promising Flemington outing to record a terrific win on Ballarat Cup day.

The son of Medaglia D’Oro did a terrific job last time in, winning twice at Caulfield and running third at Listed level in Brisbane before notching a second-up win at Pakenham on October 15.

Durendal then ran a solid fifth to Malaguerra in a terrific form race at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day. Malaguerra franked the quality of the event with another win at Flemington on Emirates Stakes day.

Ben Melham took over aboard Durendal in the Isuzu Handicap (1400m) and gave the smart four-year-old a lovely from just off the speed from barrier one.

Melham eased Durendal off the leaders’ heels early in the straight before the gelding powered home over the last 200m to score by two lengths, notching his first win over 1400m.

“Everything panned out perfectly for him and he won really well,” Simon Zahra, who trains Durendal in partnership with Mathew Ellerton, said.

“He’s a smart horse and he probably over-raced a little bit last time but the three weeks between runs was perfect for him.

“He’s pretty classy and he was too good today.”

Zahra said the stable could freshen Durendal before running the talented galloper in feature sprints over the Christmas / New Year period.

Congratulations to Durendal’s owners and all involved with his latest win, his fifth in 14 starts, which took his earnings to more than $289,000.
