Brisbane now for Zoutori after Caulfield victory
May 11, 2019
A start in the Stradbroke Handicap is an outside possibility but trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra will send Zoutori to Brisbane for a Group III race after the three-year-old scored again at Caulfield.
Zoutori scored at Pakenham and Flemington at his first two starts this time in before carrying 60kg to victory in the Rod Fenwick Handicap (1600m).
The race wasn’t quite run to suit the son of Zoustar but Zoutori showed his class under Craig Williams’ riding.
Zoutori lifted like a quality performer when asked, despite his big weight, to score by 1 ¼ lengths.
Ellerton said the Group III Fred Best Classic (1400m) at Eagle Farm on May 25 was a good Brisbane kick-off point for the son of Zoustar.
The Flemington trainer said Zoutori’s performance in the Fred Best Classic would determine whether the promising performer earned a crack at the Stradbroke.
"He's in the Stradbroke but I don't know if he's that good," Ellerton said.
"We'll run him in the Fred Best and see where that takes us.
"I don't know what his ceiling is but we might go and give him his chance up in Queensland in something a bit better.
"If I put this horse in the paddock and think about the spring he'll be stuck in no-mans-land with his rating.”
Zoutori’s impressive win was his fourth in only 11 starts while the $74,250 winner’s cheque took his stakes tally to more than $220,000.
Zoutori gave Ellerton Zahra Racing its 55th win for the year and, equally importantly, helped the stable through the $4 million barrier in prizemoney for the season.
The stable has almost three months left in the season to beat last season’s prizemoney tally of $4.7 million.
Congratulations to Zoutori’s owners and all involved with the exciting three-year-old’s latest win.
