Zoutori cruises to first-up win at Pakenham
Apr 04, 2019
Zoutori was simply a class above his rivals when resuming with a soft win at Pakenham.
Zoutori was unlucky not to have notched a win at stakes level in the spring and was competitive in much harder races than the Vacationer Rough Rider BM70 Handicap (1200m).
Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra decided to give Zoutori an easier assignment for his first run of 2019 and the son of Zoustar had little trouble posting his second win in nine starts.
Jockey Damian Lane let Zoutori settle in the second half of the field before allowing the three-year-old to stride into the race out wide rounding the home turn.
Zoutori sprinted to the lead at the 200m but Lane let the gelding coast to the line in the last 100m before scoring easily by 1 ¼ lengths.
Lane has done plenty of work on Zoutori in the lead-up to his first-up outing and said the exciting performer has improved since the spring.
“I’m just rapt for him to win because he was on the tail of some really good horses in the spring and it can just dent their confidence when they’re just a couple of lengths off them,” Lane said.
“It was good for Matty and Simon to bring him here for a ratings race and get a win on the board.
“He’s really grown up this prep. He’s matured into a really nice horse.
“He was overdoing it a bit last prep but Matty took the cross-over noseband off him and he seems to be relaxing better.”
Zoutori’s Pakenham win earned connections a $19,250 winner’s cheque, taking his stakes tally to more than $72,000.
Congratulations to Zoutori’s owners on their latest victory with the promising galloper.
