Seymour win perfectly timed by Smart Missile mare
Mar 27, 2019
The progeny of solid stallion Smart Missile was on display in Josephine Sea’s timely win at Seymour.
Ellerton Zahra Racing have offered ownership opportunities in a terrific yearling colt by the sire and Josephine Sea showed the stallion’s stock had plenty of ability with her dominant fresh win.
The Avenel Equine Hospital BM70 Handicap (1000m) started badly for Josephine Sea, who was slow away from the barriers before she improved to race just beyond midfield in the early and middle stages.
Jockey Damien Thornton made the most of a snippet of luck on the home turn, driving Josephine Sea along the inside into a rails run at the 300m.
Josephine Sea dashed to the lead and drew clear late to score a strong 2 ¼ length success for trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra.
Thornton said connections planned to have Josephine Sea closer to the lead but he had to change plans when the mare began slowly.
“It wasn’t the plan, but it worked out that way,” Thornton said.
“She has got a few barrier manner issues. If she behaves herself, she jumps well and she’s on the speed but if she behaves herself, then you’re out the back and have got to hope for the best.
“We got the runs through and she showed good turn of foot when the runs came, and she was a class above these.”
Thornton said Josephine Sea had the ability to win harder races if she could sort out her barrier issues.
“We know she can gallop. She has just got a few bad barrier manners,” Thornton said.
“If she can overcome then, she’ll be a handy filly.”
Josephine Sea’s Seymour win was her third in a 15-start career that also features seven minor placings while her stakes tally jumped to more than $120,000 with her latest success.
Congratulations to the team at Epona Park and those at Gallivant Racing on their latest win the Smart Missile mare.
