EZR to take on the locals in Tasmanian Derby

Ellerton Zahra Racing will make a rare foray to the Apple Isle when Heir Of Tavistock takes on the locals and other interstate raiders in the Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m).

Heir Of Tavistock showed staying promise with his effort to dead-heat over 1600m at Cranbourne two starts back but was far from disgraced when fourth to the promising Oceanex at Flemington on January 19.

Co-trainer Simon Zahra said Heir Of Tavistock had shown enough to be a winning chance at his first trip away from Victoria.

“It was on the radar a little bit for a while but we had a look at it and for $150,000, it looks a nice race for him,” Zahra, who trains Heir Of Tavistock in partnership with Mathew Ellerton, said.

“He was good at Cranbourne where he didn’t give in at any stage and his effort in front at Flemington was fairly good as well.”

Heir Of Tavistock has had four runs in his second racing preparation, which Zahra said left the stable confident of the son of Tavistock running out the 2200m of the Tasmanian Derby.

“They have all got to go up in distance but he was good at his first go over the 2000m at Flemington and he will improve off that,” he said.

“He relaxed well and did a good job.”

Ellerton and Zahra have decided to put the blinkers on the gelding for the Tasmanian Derby in a bid to help him make the step up to stakes company.

“We’ve got the blinkers on our bloke for the first time. He showed he needed them at Flemington but he’s still learning and will get better with racing,” Zahra said.

“He’s travelled over there well so he’s got to be a chance.”

Damien Thornton will head to Hobart to ride Heir Of Tavistock in the Tasmanian Derby.
