Blinkers the winning Choice for Weapon at Pakenham
Jan 31, 2019
He might be a bit of a slow learner but Weapon Of Choice broke his maiden in determined fashion on the big Pakenham track.
The son of Redoute’s Choice has taken time to work out his job but the gelding did a terrific job to score with the aid of blinkers in the Swear @ Spendthrift 3YO Maiden Plate (1600m).
Weapon Of Choice showed he was nearing a win with a good third at Ararat at his previous start but he justified Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra’s gear change in his Pakenham assignment.
Perfectly handled by jockey Damian Lane, Weapon Of Choice followed the leaders before rolling three-wide to improve rounding the home turn.
Lane sent Weapon Of Choice to challenge the leaders early in the long Pakenham home straight and the three-year-old did his bit when seeing off late challengers to score a solid win.
Lane said Weapon Of Choice still had a lot to learn but he was going to improve with racing.
“He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed and he’s just taken a while to come to hand,” Lane said.
“He missed a lot as a young horse through an injury. He’s done well.
“Now he’s getting out over a trip and learning the caper, hopefully he can to build on what he’s done so far.
“Hopefully he can build on that and learn a bit more.”
Weapon Of Choice was the latest Ellerton Zahra Racing winner to carry the well-known Contract Racing silks to victory while Lane has become an important part of the operation of the great stable supporters.
“I get a lot of rides for the Contract team and it’s always very satisfying to get a win,” Lane said.
Weapon Of Choice’s first win came at his fourth start while the $27,650 winner’s cheque took his stakes tally to more than $30,000.
Congratulations to all involved with the developing performer’s maiden win.
