Serious fillies in Geelong Boxing Day quinella
Dec 26, 2018
There was little in it in the finish but Something Serious led home an Ellerton Zahra Racing quinella at Geelong on Boxing Day.
Something Serious held on to beat stablemate Darmasun by a head in a tight end to the Petstock Belmont SV 3YO Fillies Maiden Plate (1312m) under desperate riding from jockey Chris Symons.
Something Serious had improved sharply with the additions of a tongue tie for her good second at Ararat on December11 before stepping from 1100m to 1312m for her Geelong assignment.
Something Serious was wide early before settling in a position tracking the leaders down the long Geelong back straight but Symons was urging along the daughter of Magnus around the home turn.
Something Serious hit the lead but started to weaken late as Darmasun bore down on her in the last 50m but she held on to break through for a win at her fourth start.
“We didn’t think there was going to be much between them in that race and that’s exactly how it turned out,” Simon Zahra, who trains Something Serious in partnership with Mathew Ellerton, said.
“The race could have gone either way because they’re both nice fillies that are going to get better with racing.
“Something Serious was under pressure a long way out but the way she responded was very pleasing and she held on well in the last bit.”
Something Serious was the latest winner out of the great producer Voltara to notch a win for Ellerton Zahra Racing.
The stable has now won races with three of Voltara’s progeny with the mare also the dam of the city winners Creativity and Exceltara.
Hopefully Something Serious can follow those two runners to a city win in the near future.
Congratulations to great Ellerton Zahra Racing supporters Merricks Station on another win in partnership with the stable.
