Matty fires again at The Valley
Dec 21, 2018
Returning to the Moonee Valley circuit sent Matty back into the winner’s circle in the ninth heat of the 55-Second Challenge (955m).
Matty scored over the short course two starts back before running a sound fifth at Pakenham at his next outing on December 8.
Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra sent the son of Nicconi back to The Valley for his last assignment before Christmas and the smart sprinter duly notched a deserved win.
Apprentice Georgina Cartwright had one of her first rides for Ellerton Zahra Racing in the $55,000 race and gave the sprinter every chance in the wet conditions.
Matty travelled well near the speed before the five-year-old had to dig deep to overhaul the stubborn leader, who would not wilt in the last 50m but he managed to score a narrow win.
“(Runner-up) Plateau Gold surprised me. He gave a fair kick and I was lucky to run him down in the straight,” Cartwright said.
“He won here (at The Valley) two starts ago and gets around the track really well and today the give in the track really suited him.
“I’ve only had a couple of rides for Ellerton Zahra Racing and it was great to get a winner for them.”
Zahra said Matty’s latest win was a welcome reward for the gelding’s efforts during a consistent preparation.
“He’s done a great job for us this time in with three wins from six runs in the spring and now summer so he’s be a terrific horse for the stable this season,” Zahra said.
“He’s been able to put together a decent amount of consistent work and he’s racing very consistently and getting the rewards for his owners.”
Matty’s latest win was his sixth in only 14 starts while the $30,250 winner’s cheque took his stakes tally to more than $145,000.
Congratulations to Matty’s terrific band of owners and all involved with the handy galloper’s latest victory.
