Exceltara storms to first-up win at Mornington

Nov 04, 2018

Exceltara gave his opposition a start and a beating when making the perfect start to his campaign at Mornington.

Exceltara had his first run since May when he stepped out in the Progress Signs Handicap (1200m) and the four-year-old took time to find his feet early in the race.

The gelding settled last for jockey Damien Thornton before Exceltara began to chase down the side of the tricky Mornington track.

Exceltara made ground approaching the home turn before over-powering his rivals in the short straight to score what turned out to be a comfortable win.

I was a little bit concerned after drawing that gate (barrier seven),” Thornton said.

“I would have loved to have drawn a softer gate and bounce and been that bit closer but he got the job done well.

“He never really travelled but he let down really well.”

Thornton noted Exceltara still had plenty of improvement to come after his impressive win, which was the horse’s third in 12 starts.

“He’s still not there yet and he’s only going to get better as the prep goes on,” Thornton said.

“He trialled up really nicely into this and he’s probably going to need this run.

“He’s a big gross horse so he’s certainly going to improve off the run.”

Exceltara’s win earned connections a $16,500 winner’s cheque, taking his stakes tally to more than $153,000.

Congratulations to Exceltara’s owners and all involved with his latest success at Mornington.
