Odeon has one last crack at a Caulfield Cup start in Herbert Power

Oct 11, 2018

Odeon will have his last chance to qualify for a Caulfield Cup start in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield.

Odeon went within a half-length of earning a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption when an unlucky third in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) on September 22 but will have another crack at booking a place in the $3 million event on Saturday.

Co-trainer Simon Zahra said the son of Zacinto had continued to please him and training partner Mathew Ellerton but it was a matter of Odeon getting the luck he needed in running.

“We can’t be happier with the way he’s gong but he hasn’t had much luck in his last couple of starts,” Zahra said.

“He is racing really well. His run at The Valley over a mile was excellent and you could say he should have won the Naturalism Stakes.

“There’s a big field in the Herbert Power Stakes and there should be plenty of pace on for him and he’s certainly looking for the 2400m now.”

Damien Thornton will ride Odeon while Mark Zahra has the ride on Booker in the Group 3 Cape Grim Beef Stakes (1200m).

Booker was a touch disappointing when resuming in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes but Zahra said the Group 2 winner could be forgiven for that run.

“She just needed that run first-up but the run has brought her along well,” Zahra said.

“She’ll be a lot fitter for Saturday and we’ve decided to put the blinkers on her to sharpen her up a little bit so we expect her to run a much improved race.”

Veteran sprinter Flamberge will resume in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m).

“He’s going well and he wasn’t far away first-up last prep,” Zahra said.

“He didn’t win a race last time in but all of his runs were really good and he’s going just as well this time in so he could pull out a good run fresh.”

Damian Lane will ride Flamberge in the Schillaci Stakes.

Good luck to the connections of all the Ellerton Zahra Racing horses in action on Caulfield Guineas day.
