Zoutori's big spring starts with Kyneton victory

Oct 05, 2018

Zoutori’s bid for spring riches has started on the best possible note with a determined first-up success at Kyneton.

Zoutori showed plenty of promise as two-year-old with city placings at Flemington and Sandown to convince trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra he was worth a chance at stakes racing during the spring.

Ellerton and Zahra have earmarked the Group 3 Gothic Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) as possible targets for the son of Zoustar but he had to get through the Organs Coaches Maiden Plate (1200m) at Kyneton.

Zoutori started as an odds-on favourite but jockey Andrew Mallyon was keen to keep the gelding out of trouble early, finding a spot three-wide in the second half of the field until the promising galloper started to circle his rivals on the home turn.

Mallyon droved Zoutori to challenge the leader at the 100m before the three-year-old did best despite tiring late, scoring by a long neck.

“We just didn’t want to over-complicate it. He’s still pretty new and we didn’t want to keep him bottled up,” Zahra said.

“He got him out wide and kept him out of trouble and the horse did a good job.

“He’d probably had enough about 100(m) out and he didn’t quite know how to put them away but he’s still going to furnish into a nice horse.

“He’ll go to Caulfield in a couple of weeks. On Caulfield Cup day there’s a 14(00m race) there and if he shows he’s up to it we’ll go to Derby day with him.

“After his runs at Flemington (and Sandown), Mathew and I put him away with an eye on late in the spring and we’ve got him to run on a program of races every two weeks.”

Zoutori’s maiden win came at his fifth start while the $12,650 winner’s cheque took his stakes tally to more than $30,000 with a lot more to come as he matures.

Congratulations to Zoutori’s owners and all involved with the exciting performer’s Kyneton success.
