Odeon still going for Caulfield Cup

Oct 02, 2018

Ellerton Zahra Racing won’t give up on its attempt to get Odeon into the Caulfield Cup after his near-miss in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.

The Naturalism Stakes offered a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption to the winner but Odeon had little luck at key points of the race before running on well to finish a half-length from the winner Night’s Watch.

Odeon is still well down the Caulfield Cup order of entry but trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra still have one last shot to get the gelding into the $5 million event on October 20.

“He was unlucky but the way he finished the race off shows the horse is flying,” Zahra said.

“We’ll keep trying to get him to the Caulfield Cup, there’s no reason to change our minds with him.

“He’ll go to the Herbert Power (Stakes) and we’ll try to get in through that race.”

The Herbert Power Stakes also offer a guaranteed Caulfield Cup start to the winner. The Herbert Power Stakes will be run over 2400m at Caulfield on October 13.
