Kuroshio stock ready to soar this season

Sep 17, 2018

Kuroshio’s second racing crop is about to hit the track and Ellerton Zahra Racing is thrilled with the young stallion’s progress.

Kuroshio was a speed machine in his racing days but his progeny has shown plenty of scope and the capability to stretch out over more ground than the short courses of the stallion’s three wins.

Kuroshio’s stock has performed well in both hemispheres with the stallion’s first crop in both the northern and southern hemispheres producing five winners apiece.

Kuroshio’s son Dunkerron was placed at Group 2 level in the UK while his daughter Daphinia was a winner and was stakes placed herself behind a subsequent Group 2 winner. Daphinia finished second when first-up at Chelmsford last weekend.

The sire’s Australasian stock has impressed with wins in both Australia and New Zealand and in Victoria, Perth and the Northern Territory to show the versatility of the Kuroshio breed.

Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra have been pleased with the progress of their initial Kuroshio purchase Tsushima while their two-year-old colt out of Docherty Woods has developed well as his racing debut draws closer.

“We’ve been really pleased with what this colt has shown us when he has been in the stable,” Zahra said.

“He’s been pretty independent and really professional, which is a great indicator that he’s pretty forward and stands up well to a two-year-old preparation.

“He’s had some barrier practice and he’s been really laid back, which makes him really easy to work, with so we’re thinking he could be a candidate for the early two-year-old races.”

The Kuroshio / Docherty Woods colt has re-entered the stable for another preparation to determine whether he makes the first Melbourne two-year-old races in October.

An opportunity still remains to get involved with the ownership of this colt, which will be available for inspection at the stable’s latest barbecue on September 22.
