Caulfield and Melbourne Cup dream alive for Ellerton Zahra Racing
Aug 31, 2018
Ellerton Zahra Racing took its first steps towards a dream when nominating two horses for the 2018 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra entered Sheezdashing and Odeon for the Caulfield Cup while Odeon has also been nominated for Australia’s greatest race, the Melbourne Cup.
“They’re both exciting stayers that deserve their chance to go along the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup path,”: Zahra said.
“We’ll get them ready and let the horses tell us whether they’ll get there.
“It’s not easy to get into a Caulfield or Melbourne Cup let alone win one but Sheezdashing and Odeon will have their chance to give their owners the dream of running in two of the world’s great races.”
Sheezdashing developed into one of the most promising stayers in Australia during her three-year-old campaign, running a narrow second in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks over 2000m in Adelaide and an unlucky third in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks over 2200m in May.
Zahra said Sheezdashing’s pedigree suggests she would only improve as a four-year-old.
“She’s by Myboycharlie, who is the sire of the Caulfield Cup winner Jameka and her grand-dam ran fourth in an (VRC) Oaks, so she’ll get out to 2400m without a problem,” Zahra said.
“She relaxes well and showed a great turn of foot when she got out to staying trips in the autumn, so it will be a matter of whether the breaks go her way in the spring.”
Odeon has always shown enough promise to be worthy of a crack at the big races in the spring of 2018.
“He got out to a Derby trip as a three-year-old and ran very well and he came of age last spring” Zahra said.
“He was just a bit off top form in the autumn but was still competitive in strong races and his two runs this time in have shown that he has come back well again.”
Odeon and Sheezdashing will embark on an exciting journey to the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the spring. We’ll be documenting every step of the way for stable followers so check back in to Ellerton Zahra Racing’s website for updates on the pair’s progress.
