Three chances for Ellerton Zahra Racing to make a fast start to spring

Aug 31, 2018

Ellerton Zahra Racing will be in the thick of the action on the first day of spring with runners in three Group races at Caulfield’s Memsie Stakes meeting.

Creativity will represent the stable in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes over 1200m, while Ollivander will have his second-up run in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes over the same distance.

Crystal Dreamer will take on a smart field of sprinters in the Group 3 The Heath 1100.

Creativity is a double-figure odds in Cockram Stakes betting the race is a wide-open affair with many of the 16 runners having winning chances of varying degrees.

Creativity goes into the $150,000 race in consistent form. It took the Group 1 winner La Bella Diosa to run her down at her hast start at Caulfield and co-trainer Simon Zahra expects another strong performance.

“She just had to do a bit of work last time and it left her a bit of a sitting duck late, but she ran really well,” Zahra, who trains Creativity in partnership with Mathew Ellerton, said.

“She hasn’t put a foot wrong in her work since that run and Mathew and I are really happy with her. She has to be an each-way chance in a good field.”

Classy colt Ollivander will have a chance to redeem himself after a disappointing first-up run when he steps out in the McNeil Stakes.

Ollivander didn’t finish his race off at the expected level when resuming in the Vain Stakes but Ellerton and Zahra are happy to give the three-year-old another stakes in Group company.

“Damian (Lane) said he didn’t quite stretch out as well as he would have liked last time, so we weren’t sure what to make of that run,” Zahra said.

“We can’t fault him since and his work has been fine, so we’ll give him another go and see what he can do.”

Crystal Dreamer will take on some smart horses under unfavourable weight terms in the Heath 1100m.

The sprinter will be up against Group 1 winners Santa Ana Lane and Brave Smash while Group 2 winner Voodoo Lad is also among his rivals. However, Crystal Dreamer only gets 3kg from Santa Ana Lane and two from Brave Smash under the set weights and penalties conditions of the $150,000 contest.

“He has got a few things against him, especially the weight and the draw, but he’s so honest and likes Caulfield that he’ll put in his usual competitive effort,” Zahra said.

“He’ll put himself in a good spot in the run and he’ll be giving his best effort like he does at every start.”

Damien Thornton will ride all three Ellerton Zahra Racing runners at Caulfield.

Good luck to the owners of the three horses and thanks to our terrific staff for their dedication to get our horses to the races in such terrific shape.
