Grumpy Josephine completes EZR city double at Mornington
Jun 11, 2018
Josephine Sea wasn’t in the best of moods before the race but her connections were thrilled after she completed a city double for Ellerton Zahra Racing at Mornington.
Josephine Sea was a handful for jockey Damian Lane and the barrier attendants before the Anchor Point Engineering Handicap (1200m) before vets gave the mare the all-clear to compete in the $40,000 race.
A fair beginning left Josephine Sea racing wide in the early and middle stages but Lane wasn’t concerned, preferring to keep the daughter of Smart Missile happy and travelling comfortably until the 400m.
Josephine Sea challenged the leaders on the home turn before dashing clear in the straight to score by two lengths, giving the rainbow and grey colours of great stable supporters Epona Park a second victory at the meeting.
“She gave us a hard time in the barriers so the barrier boys did a great job with her,” Lane said.
“After that, she did everything right in the run and she was too good.
“She trialled really well last week at Flemington and I thought, on paper, that she looked a class above them and she raced that way.”
While Lane was aboard Josephine Sea, Damian Thornton combined with Ellerton Zahra Racing for another win with Jeddah Aheadah in the Steller.com.au Maiden Plate (1600m).
Thornton gave Jeddah Aheadah the perfect run behind the speed before she sprinted well to break her maiden with a two-length win at her sixth start.
“I just made sure she had a clear run down the side of the track and she did the rest,” Thornton said.
“It’s good to get a win for Matty and Simon. They have got a lot of nice horses coming through and it’s good for her to win her maiden and hopefully get a few more wins.”
Congratulations to Epona Park and all the owners of Josephine Sea and Jeddah Aheadah and a big thank you to the team for their hard work getting the horses to the races.
