Linguist speaks the language of victory at Cranbourne

May 25, 2018

The planets aligned for smart mare Linguist at Cranbourne and the handy mare duly delivered a victory in the $50,000 Mercedes-Benz Mornington Mile Series Final.

Linguist had her favourite 1600m trip, soft ground and the Cranbourne track in her favour but the fact the race was her third run this time in was the clincher.

Linguist scored third-up at Ballarat last time in and repeated the effort with a determined performance under Andrew Mallyon’s riding.

The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained mare had the perfect run from barrier two, which left Mallyon with the task of easing the daughter of Helmet away from the inside on the home turn.

Linguist hit the front at the 200m before comfortably holding her rivals in heavy ground to score by 1 ¼ lengths.

Mallyon said Linguist’s work at Ellerton Zahra Racing’s Flemington base left him confident of a forward showing.

“I was pretty confident coming here tonight with her,” Mallyon said.

“She had worked pretty well coming into this. She drew a great gate and the heavy track with no weight on her back, she ticked all of the boxes she needed to win.

“Once she got into the clear, she was too good for them.

“She toughed it out to the end and with wet tracks, she’s in at the right rime of the year so I can’t see why she can’t go on from here and pick up another couple of races on the way.”

Linguist earned connections a $35,900 winner’s cheque for her win, which was her fourth in 14 starts, propelling her prizemoney tally to more than $210,000.

Congratulations to the team at First Light Racing, Merricks Station and all Linguist’s owners for their latest success with the talented four-year-old.
