Another Group 1 shot for Sheezdashing in Queensland Oaks

May 24, 2018

Can Sheezdashing’s run of minor placings end with a win in Saturday’s Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben.

Sheezdashing has finished second at her last three starts, including a fast-finishing effort behind Sopressa in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) in Adelaide to be in good form for her latest shot at a Group 1 win.

Co-trainer Simon Zahra said Sheezdashing has done well since he and training partner Mathew Ellerton capitalised on a chance to fly the three-year-old to Doomben last week.

“She came back here and did a few days at home, but they rang out of nowhere and said there’s a spot on the plane for her,” Zahra said.

“We had to take the chance to get her on the plane because nine times out of 10, you can’t get on them.”

Zahra said Sheezdashing has thrived since arriving in Brisbane and pleased his staff with her light workout on Thursday morning.

“She worked really well this morning. The rider that is up with her said she worked the best she has gone that way of going,” Zahra said.

“She worked over evens this morning and ran a mile and finished off in 38 seconds for the last three (furlongs – 600m) on Tuesday.

“She hasn’t done too much because she doesn’t need a lot of work at this stage of her preparation.”

The Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart won the Australasian Oaks before making the trip north to claim the Queensland Oaks last year.

Zahra said the form out of the Australasian Oaks should again stack up in 2018, which should make for a good contest.

“I think it will stand up well. You wouldn’t think there is a Winx going up there from Sydney,” Zahra said.

“I don’t think it’s a super strong race on Saturday and they should be pretty evenly matched.”

Damien Thornton will ride Sheezdashing in Saturday’s $500,000 event.

Good luck to Sheezdashing’s owners and all involved with getting the filly to Group 1 races.
