Marcel From Madrid produces some magic in National Stakes
May 19, 2018
Marcel From Madrid stamped himself as one to watch in the spring after he led home an Ellerton Zahra Racing quinella in the Group 3 National Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.
Marcel From Madrid was an outstanding debut winner at Benalla but had to make the jump from a maiden to Group 3 level while coping with an eight-hour float journey to Adelaide.
However, Marcel From Madrid was up to all challenges. The son of Sepoy sprinted well from beyond midfield under jockey Damian Lane to score a dominant 1 ¾ length win.
Marcel From Madrid’s stablemate Aristia did a terrific job to run home well for second and she’s another of the stable that is in for a big campaign as a spring three-year-old.
Co-trainer Simon Zahra said Marcel From Madrid’s win confirmed the judgement of himself and training partner Mathew Ellerton.
“We always had a pretty big opinion of him and he was probably touted as our best two-year-old,” Zahra told Racing Victoria.
“He doesn’t know a lot and we brought him over for a good trip and to get him out of the stable and hopefully grow him up for the spring.
“Damian rode him well. He (Marcel From Madrid) just wanted to overdo it early but he (Lane) got him out and gave him a bit of space and he appreciated that.
“He let down really well. He still did a lot wrong when he hit the front but he’s a really nice horse in the making.”
Marcel From Madrid earned his terrific band of owners $128,000 in prizemoney for his super win, taking his stakes tally to more than $140,000 from only two starts.
The sky is the limit for Marcel From Madrid, who joined his Derby-winning half-brother Levendi as a stakes winner with his Adelaide success.
Congratulations to the owners of both Marcel From Madrid and Aristia as well as all involved with getting the two exciting horses to Adelaide.
