Uzayli starts Ellerton Zahra Racing double at Bendigo
May 04, 2018
Uzayli showed a flood can often follow a period of drought with another determined win at Bendigo.
Uzayli snapped a run of eight second placings with her victory at her previous outing at Werribee but she quickly added to her win tally in the Sandhurst Stockfeeds BM58 Handicap (1400m).
Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra weren’t deterred by the fact Uzayli had not raced in heavy conditions before the mare justified their confidence with a terrific performance.
Jockey Damian Lane guided the right path for Uzayli in the wet conditions before the daughter of Lonhro did the rest, over-running the leaders in the straight to score by a long neck.
“She’s done a good job,” Lane said.
“She was always honest but she’d just bump into one better. It was never that she was a non-winner.
“She always a bit unlucky. It’s great to see her string two together for connections.”
While Lane was aboard Uzayli, Damien Thornton completed a double for the stable when he steered See Me Fly to victory in the Jarrod Larkin Concreting BM70 Handicap (1300m).
See Me Fly’s racing style of getting back in the field means he needs luck but Thornton got the gelding into the best part of the track on the outside rail in the straight to score by a half length.
See Me Fly’s last win was in September 2017 but Thornton said the gelding had a trick or two up his sleeve, which cut his winning margin.
“Once he hit the front, he pricked his ears and slammed the brakes on and ducked in a bit so there was probably another length or two there,” Thornton said.
“He actually got there pretty easy then floated a bit.
“He got the job done, which was good.”
Congratulations to the owners of both stable winners and all involved with Ellerton Zahra Racing’s success at Bendigo.
