Marcel marvellous in Benalla debut victory

His half-brother is a star in the making and Marcel From Madrid did his bit to hold up the family honour with a terrific debut win at Benalla.

Marcel From Madrid is a half-brother to the Group I Australian Derby winner Levendi and the youngster showed he was an exciting type himself with a dominant victory in the DKM Builders 2YO Maiden Plate (1100m).

The son of Sepoy had promised plenty with his solid jumpouts leading up to the Benalla event and started as a short-priced favourite in his maiden racetrack outing.

Damian Lane travelled to central Victoria to ride Marcel From Madrid and let the gelding settle comfortably midfield before letting him improve three-wide from the 600m.

Marcel From Madrid descended on his opposition at the 200m before cruising away under minimal pressure to score by 2 ½ lengths.

“He has shown us a lot, including last time in and credit to the owners, they let us geld him despite showing that level of ability,” Simon Zahra, who trains Marcel From Madrid in partnership with Mathew Ellerton, said.

“He has got a fair way to go yet. He’s still pretty new and pretty wispy.

“With a bit of racing and a bit of time, he’ll be a nice horse.”

Zahra said the Flemington stable wanted to get Marcel From Madrid’s debut outing of the way before deciding their next move with the promising performer.

“We’ll just see how he pulls up,” Zahra said.

“He might want the cut out of the ground because he feels the ground a bit. We’ll just see what happens without getting too carried away just yet.

“But he’s going the right way. I think in time, he’ll get there.”
