Finally! A victory for Uzayli at Werribee

Apr 19, 2018

Eight second placings made Uzayli’s breakthrough win at Werribee even more enjoyable.

Uzayli’s Werribee win came at her 14th start but the four-year-old’s ability was never in question with some near misses among those brave efforts.

But the photo went the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained mare’s way in the Tigers Clubhouse Maiden Plate (1100m).

Ellerton and Zahra booked versatile jockey Jamie Mott to ride Uzayli in the $22,000 race and the rider’s vigour in the concluding stages was enough to get the daughter of Lonhro over the line.

Mott let Uzayli find her feet early in the race before bringing her with a terrific run in the straight, giving her owners the thrill of winning after so many luckless outings.

“She’s got a bit of ability and I was back in the field and needed a bit of luck but she was good enough to make her own luck,” Mott said.

“Once a little gap came, she was able to push her way through.

“She was really good. She had a bit of a think once she loomed up outside the second horse but I just shook the reins at her and she went on to win it.

“Hopefully she can take a bit of confidence from this.”

Uzayli’s first winner’s cheque of $12,100 took her overall earnings to almost $50,000.

Some horses that have taken a while to break through for a win go on with it and win a few more races with the new-found knowledge of how to get over the line first.

Congratulations to Uzayli’s patient owners and all involved with her success.
