Beltum belts them at Geelong
Nov 16, 2015
Ellerton Zahra Racing and First Light Racing combined for a second winner in three days when Beltum powered to victory at Geelong.
The team produced a winner at Moonee Valley on Friday night when Trevinder overcame a wide run to score while Beltum enjoyed a lovely trip to score at Geelong.
Beltum had had different jockeys aboard at each of his three runs back from a spell but trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra opted for the experience of Caulfield and Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Steven King to ride the gelding in the Audi R8 Handicap (1715m).
Beltum’s rating meant that he was again compelled to carry 60kg in the Rating 58 contest but the son of Stratum handled the task well, aided by King’s perfect handling.
King let Beltum settled just off the speed from barrier four before the four-year-old began to track up behind the leaders under his own steam approaching the turn.
Beltum eased his way into clear running before the soft run allowed him to sprint quickly at the 200m. The gelding dashed away to score a soft 1-½ length win.
“He’s been going so well since he has come back from a spell,” Zahra said.
“All three runs were terrific and then to win like that was great.
“We’ve always thought he might make a nice stayer and he’s shown this time in that he could be maturing into a horse that will perform well over 2000m or further.
“He’s done the job here at 1715m and was really strong on the line so we might look for something a little bit further.”
Beltum’s dominant Geelong win earned connections a $9600 winner’s cheque, taking his stakes tally to more than $28,000.
Congratulations to wonderful stable clients First Light Racing and Beltum’s owners on the promising galloper’s latest win.
