Impeccably-bred Crystal sprouts Wings at Wangaratta

Mar 03, 2018

With her pedigree, it was only a matter of time until Crystal Wings showed her talent with an impressive breakthrough win.

Owners Hesket Bloodstock and trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra had to wait eight starts for Crystal Wings to emerge but the three-year-old broke through in impressive fashion at Wangaratta.

Crystal Wings headed to Wangaratta for her first run since the spring and the Exceed And Excel filly was simply too talented for her rivals in the Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway 3YO Maiden Plate (1100m).

She became the fourth winner from as many runners for her dam Crystal Fairy, who is a half-sister to the stable’s Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily and her stakes-winning siblings Amaethon, Crystal Wit and Crystal Web.

Ellerton and Zahra booked Damien Thornton to ride Crystal Wings and the young rider had to a do little work to keep his mount settled in the early and middle stages to have her in touch with the leaders on the home turn.

Crystal Wings dashed clear when asked to sprint early in the straight before she cruised to a 2 ¼ length win.

“She has always shown ability,” Zahra said.

“We thought enough of her to run her in a Group race at her first start, but she has taken a bit of time to come together.

“A couple of things went wrong with her last preparation, so we stopped after two runs. She has come back well and a bit stronger, which showed in her win.

“We put the tongue tie on her and that seemed to be a help to her. It was a smart win.”

Crystal Wings earned $20,500 in prizemoney for her strong Wangaratta success.

Congratulations to Hesket Bloodstock and all involved with Crystal Wings’s first-up win.
