Gippsland stroll for Club Tropicana at Sale

Small fields can be a graveyard for short-priced favourites but Club Tropicana had no such trouble accounting for her opposition at Sale.

Club Tropicana started as a long odds-on favourite to win the Wellington Regional Tourism F&M BM64 Handicap (1100m) after an excellent first-up run at Bendigo on November 1.

Chris Symons took luck out of the equation, sending Club Tropicana to the front of the four-horse field early in the race and the daughter of Smart Missile simply dominated her opposition, scoring by four lengths.

Symons said he was always confident Club Tropicana would notch her second win at her 11th start despite the fact the mare was a touch difficult at the barriers.

“She has got lots of ability but I rode her upside down in that small field because you can be a victim of circumstances,” Symons said.

“She made her own luck by beginning well but she’s better ridden conservatively to finish off.

“She was always going be hard to beat but she is a work in progress.”

Club Tropicana’s win was the eighth for trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra in the first 15 days of November and Symons has played a significant role in the team’s success by being aboard for four of those victories.

“I’ve had great support from the Ellerton Zahra camp, who are flying the moment with a lot of winners,” Symons said.

“They have also had a lot of seconds but they are always competitive and it’s been good to be part of a good team environment.”

Club Tropicana earned a $13,750 winner’s cheque for her outstanding display, taking her stakes tally to more than $49,000 in stakes.

Congratulations to Club Tropicana’s super bunch of owners and all involved with the four-year-old’s impressive win.
