Ellerton Zahra double at Caulfield

Apr 08, 2017

Sword Of Light has relished the step back up to 1600m to record a deserved win, starting a stable double, at Caulfield.

Sword Of Light won her first two starts as a two-year-old but endured a winless run stretching over 14 months before her strong Caulfield success in the Buyaracehorse.com.au Handicap (1600m).

Sword Of Light raced handy and tried hard when second in the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) at her last start before enjoying the 1600m at Caulfield.

Chris Symons stuck with Sword Of Light for her $100,000 assignment and sent her forward to race handy to the speed before she quickened on the home turn. Sword Of Light hit the lead at the 300m before holding her opposition well in the straight to score by a length.

“She hasn’t won for a while but she has been racing really well over the last year and in really good company,” Simon Zahra, who trains Sword Of Light in partnership with Mathew Ellerton, said.

“She has always shown she would be effective at 1600m and for her to do it opens a few doors for her in the future.”

Sword Of Light started a stable double, which Crystal Dreamer completed two races later in the Sandown Park (UK) Handicap (1000m).

Crystal Dreamer string together three straight wins last time in and started his latest campaign with a strong win against the open-class sprinters in his $100,000 test.

Apprentice Ben Thompson had Crystal Dreamer up handy to the speed throughout before the son of Stratum outsprinted his opposition to score a decisive win.

“His fresh record is really good and he deserved to start his prep with a good win,” Zahra said.

“He has built up a pretty good record now and there’s no reason he can’t win another couple of races this time in.”

Congratulations to great stable supporters Contract Racing and Hesket Bloodstock on their pair of victories at Caulfield.
