Tropicana gets her day in the sun at Cranbourne
Apr 07, 2017
Club Tropicana showed short courses were her go with her emphatic maiden win at Cranbourne.
The three-year-old had shown talent over longer trips but the drop back to 1000m helped the daughter Smart Missile hit top form in her easy win in the Ivan's Pies Maiden Plate.
Club Tropicana ran a solid second over the distance at Yarra Valley at her previous run on February 25 but the promising galloper returned from a break in terrific order for trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra.
Experienced jockey Chris Symons resumed his partnership with Club Tropicana in the $25,000 contest and made use of barrier one to have his mount travelling easily behind the speed for most of the race.
Symons eased Club Tropicana off the fence rounding the home turn before she sprinted impressively at the 200m to score a soft 2 ¾-length win, breaking her maiden at her seventh attempt.
“She has taken a bit of time for the penny to drop but she’s coming along well now,” Zahra said.
“We backed off her after a good run at Yarra Valley and she has come back in great order now and that was a terrific win.
“She did everything right and showed what she has been doing on the track at home in a pretty good win.”
Club Tropicana earned connections a $13,750 winner’s cheque, taking her stakes tally to more than $28,000.
Congratulations to Club Tropicana’s owners and all involved in what we hope will be the first of many wins.
