Odeon scores again - and we've got another Zacinto
Mar 25, 2017
Odeon’s outstanding Mornington Guineas win underlines another great opportunity for Ellerton Zahra Racing clients.
The son of Zacinto continued his charge to a Derby start with a dominant win in the Mornington Guineas but Ellerton Zahra Racing also purchased a cracking filly by the NZ-based sire.
Odeon scored first-up at Bendigo with Damian Lane aboard be he was required in Sydney, leaving experienced jockey Jamie Mott to partner the gelding in his second-up assignment.
A good speed helped Odeon travel comfortably throughout the $100,000 contest before Mott allowed the three-year-old to stride into contention from the 600m.
Odeon quickly put the race beyond doubt in the straight before striding to an easy 2 ¼-length win.
“There’s plenty of upside to him, he sustained a long run and won well,” Simon Zahra, who trains Odeon in partnership with Mathew Ellerton, said.
“He came on a long way after his first-up run and he was always going to be hard to beat with the way he travelled.
“The owners were patient in the spring and I think they are going to get their reward with him this time in and hopefully he can keep going towards the South Australian Derby.
Mott said a chat with Lane in the days leading up to the Mornington event provided plenty of insight on how to ride the smart galloper.
“He (Lane) thought that his first up win (at Bendigo over 1400 metres) was excellent because he had a few things against him,” Mott said.
“He had a beautiful run and I got there a bit early but I thought I was on the best horse.”
Odeon’s win was another indication of the quality of the stock the under-rated sire Zacinto produces.
