Matty makes it three from three at Valley

Feb 24, 2017

Smart sprinter Matty managed to remain unbeaten on a night of firsts when resuming at Moonee Valley.

Matty won his first two starts on synthetic tracks during his spring campaign but had to make the switch to turf racing and the leap to city competition in the Roll The Dice Racing Handicap (1000m).

Matty had performed well in his jumpouts, which prompted trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra to send the son of Nicconi straight to town for his first-up assignment.

Regular Ellerton Zahra Racing rider Damian Lane gave Matty the perfect run behind the speed but the gelding had to sprint sharply at the top of the short Moonee Valley straight before lifting late to get the win in a tight photo.

The win took Matty’s record to three victories from as many starts but Ellerton said the run would do the promising sprinter the world of good.

“He looked like he was probably going to reel it in a bit easier than what he did, but he wobbled on the corner a bit and got the job done which was the main thing,” Ellerton said.

“It was probably a new experience for him, sitting off the speed and trying to reel them in. He was an on-pace sort of horse last time in.

“I thought he was probably a bit rusty in the yard and today will tidy him up.

“He’s got a fair bit of potential.”

Matty’s latest win earned connections a $27,500 winner’s cheque, which took Matty’s stakes tally to more than $51,000.

Congratulations to great stable supporters Contract Racing and all involved with Matty’s terrific city success.
