Sammy provides the Christmas cheer at Sandown
Dec 21, 2016
Honest performer Sammy The Snake got into the Christmas spirit for the second straight year with a determined front-running win at Sandown.
Sammy The Snake won at the same venue in December last year, a feat the stayer repeated with his win in Thebigscreencompany Handicap (1800m).
The gelding had performed reasonably well in two runs over 1600m but the Sammy The Snake turned in a gritty performance to score his third city win.
Apprentice Jordan Childs perfectly rated Sammy The Snake in front in the $40,000 race before the son of Golden Snake defied his challengers to score by a long neck to the joy of those that took the $26 about him.
“The further we went on, the more the horse kept grinding to the line and they just couldn’t run him down in the end,” Childs said.
“He’s a nice big horse and it worked out perfectly today. We were able to jump, go to the front, and lob along at a nice leisurely tempo.
“He quickened when we wanted to and the credit has to go to the Matty Ellerton and Simon Zahra team.”
Sammy The Snake’s win was his fifth in 27 starts but the six-year-old broke new ground for connections with his first victory below 2000m.
The gelding also earned his happy band of owners a $22,000 winner’s cheque, taking his stakes tally to more than $150,000.
Congratulations to Sammy The Snake’s owners, which include Ellerton Zahra Racing Manager Sharnee Rose, on another success with their treasured galloper.
