Perfect start for Crystal Dreamer at Werribee

Dec 11, 2016

Talented galloper Crystal Dreamer made the perfect start to his summer campaign for trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra with a comfortable win at Werribee.

Ellerton and Zahra spelled Crystal Dreamer after a solid second in BM70 company at Sandown in August but the four-year-old resumed in the same class in the Manor Lakes Handicap (1010m).

Drawing barrier one gave jockey Andrew Mallyon the opportunity to give Crystal Dreamer a comfortable run behind the leader but the rider said the race came down to a critical point on the home turn.

Mallyon had to angle Crystal Dreamer around the leader’s heels into the clear at the 250m but the son of Stratum over-powered his opposition to notch a strong victory.

“Luck was what it was all going come down to,” Mallyon said.

“I had a lovely run from the good barrier and I just needed a split at the top of the straight and it came at the right time.

“It gave me time to balance him up. He’s a bit of an awkward going horse that never really got around the track but he was out in enough time to balance up and hit the line.

“His last 100m was his best.”

Crystal Dreamer’s impressive first-up win was his fourth in 10 starts while the smart sprinter added another $16,500 to the gelding’s stakes tally, taking his earnings to more than $97,000.

Congratulations to wonderful stable supporters Contract Racing on yet another win in partnership with Ellerton Zahra Racing.
