Meadow Sprite spring to Ballarat victory

Nov 21, 2016

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra enjoyed a painless watch as Meadow Sprite strode to a strong first-up win at Ballarat.

Meadow Sprite had not raced since struggled on soft tracks in two runs in May but firmer footing ensured the mare produced a much-improved performance in the URMG Maiden Plate (1100m).

The four-year-old had trialled well in her jumpouts at Flemington leading up to her resumption and lived up to that performance with a two-length maiden success.

Katelyn Mallyon took the ride on Meadow Sprite and allowed the daughter of Artie Schiller to stride forward and sit outside the leader until easing to the front at the 250m.

Meadow Sprite held her finishing burst well over the concluding stages to score comfortably, breaking her maiden at her fifth outing.

“Her win was really good,” Mallyon said.

“It was just the perfect race for her today to kick off her maiden and hopefully she can go on with it.

“She did everything right, travelled nicely and kept finding underneath me every time I asked her.

“Hopefully she is going to improve off that. She’s quite a big horse and has gone to the paddock and done some maturing.

“She’s in for a good prep.”

Meadow Sprite’s success earned connections a $13,000 winner’s cheque and is the latest of Ellerton Zahra Racing’s many wins in partnership with great stable supporters Contract Racing.

Congratulations to all involved with Meadow Sprite’s terrific win.
