Blithe Belle shares the prize at Bendigo

Jun 02, 2016

She had to share the spoils but Blithe Belle enjoyed a much better racing experience at Bendigo.

The filly dead-heated for first in the @_BendigoJC 3YO Fillies Maiden Plate (1300m) a week after trailing the field by more than 83 lengths at Sale.

However, the Sale disappointment was an anomaly as the daughter of Hard Spun reared in the barriers as they opened while a barrier attendant had contact with Blithe Belle.

Blithe Belle took almost no part in the race but stewards deemed her a runner, meaning the non-event went on her form records.

Blithe Belle did better in the gates in her Bendigo assignment but still settled back in the field for jockey Damian Lane.

Lane took Blithe Belle three-wide at the 800m before sending her wider to improve into the race rounding the home turn.

Blithe Bell had sustained a long run but the three-year-old lifted late to take a share of the win with the Darren Weir-trained Darkening.

“We have to share the first prizemoney but we’re really happy with the way she bounced back after the Sale experience,” Simon Zahra, who trains Blithe Belle in partnership with Mathew Ellerton, said.

“She had to make a long run but she really applied herself in the straight and that was the most pleasing part of the performance.”

Blithe Belle broke her maiden at her third start since joining the stable in the autumn.

The $12,330 winner’s cheque took her stakes tally to more than $24,000.

Congratulations to great stable supporters Contract Racing on another win in partnership with Ellerton Zahra Racing.
