Euston Road delivers on promise at Flemington
May 07, 2016
Euston Road promised plenty at her previous outing before scoring a welcome win at Flemington.
The filly broke her maiden at her second start on the Geelong Synthetic track in August last year before returning to post three solid efforts to start her autumn campaign but broke through at Flemington.
Euston Road showed she was ready to win with her strong third at Sale on April 19.
"I thought she was stiff at Sale," Mathew Ellerton, who trains Euston Road in partnership with Simon Zahra, said.
"She got a long way out of her ground that day and finished off strongly."
The encouraging Sale outing produced the improvement the daughter of Time Thief needed to win the VRC Member Betty Cummings Handicap (1200m).
The barrier draw looked to go against Euston Road when she drew the inferior inside gate down the Flemington straight but jockey Chris Symons got the best out the three-year-old.
Euston Road dashed strongly to hit the front at the 100m before holding off the challengers to score by a half-length, giving the promising performer a maiden city win.
"She's been racing consistently in lesser grade and I thought today might be a challenge for her but she stepped up to the mark," Symons said.
The Flemington win was Ellerton Zahra Racing’s 24th city win of the season, leaving the stable well inside the top 10 yards in Melbourne in 2015/16.
Congratulations to Euston Road’s owners and all involved with her great city success.
