Alitaka powers to Echuca win

Apr 01, 2016

Alitaka took time to work up to full fitness but the gelding finished hard to earn a reward for consistency at Echuca.

Alitaka’s outing in the AddPrint Handicap (1200m) was his fifth of his preparation but the son of Wanted had steadily improved throughout his campaign, finishing second at Kyneton at his previous run.

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra booked experienced jockey Linda Meech for a rare ride for the stable but the Caulfield-based rider gave Alitaka every chance in the smartly-run race.

Alitaka did not show great speed from the gates, which left him in the second half of the field but Meech remained calm, letting the four-year-old find his feet until the field approached the home turn.

Meech switched Alitaka to the outside early in the straight where he took time to wind up but the First Light Racing galloper powered home to win well.

“He carried 60kg and had to get sprint hard under that weight in the last 400m,” Zahra said.

“When he hit his top, he was really strong to the line, which was great to see.

“He’s been consistent and done well at every start this time in so he deserved that win.”

Alitaka’s victory was his second in 16 starts while the $9600 winner’s cheque took his stakes tally to more than $43,800.

Congratulations to all at First Light Racing and everyone involved with Alitaka’s strong Echuca win.
