Another great season for EZR

Sep 17, 2015

Consistent improvement remained the hallmark of Ellerton Zahra Racing’s performance in the 2014/15 season.

The duo comprising trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra burst through the 70-win mark for the first season since beginning their Flemington-based partnership.

The pair notched 73 wins for the season, eclipsing the previous record of 69 victories set in the 2012/13 season while Ellerton Zahra Racing’s runners earned more than $2.53 million for the year ending July 31.

Ellerton Zahra Racing again showed itself to be among the top stables in Victoria, finishing sixth in the Melbourne trainers’ premiership with 27 city wins despite not having the numbers of many of the stables below them.

The team also finished eighth in the Victorian premiership, again outperforming many of their bigger rivals

The stable underwent a period transition with some of the previous season’s top performers such as Solicit and Pillar Of Creation continued their careers elsewhere but other young horses stepped up to fill the gap they left, particularly the stable’s three-year-old team.

Three-year-olds produced more than half of Ellerton Zahra Racing’s winners for the season with that age group winning 43 races.

The likes of Rough Justice ($181,000 in prizemoney), Durendal ($146,000) and Face Forward ($147,000) performed brilliantly for the stable.

The statistics showed the fruits of Ellerton Zahra Racing’s patient approach to racing two-year-olds with the juveniles not sent to the track unless they show they are capable of handling the workload required to compete.

Jockeys did a terrific job for Ellerton Zahra Racing last season, especially Damian Lane, Katelyn and Andrew Mallyon and Chris Symons before his injury along with the promising apprentice Damien Thornton. The team performed in outstanding fashion but at trackwork and on raceday.

Such a pleasing season could not have been achieved without the support of Ellerton Zahra Racing’s outstanding staff for whom the health and happiness of the equine residents of the stable are the first and only priority.

Our staff do a wonderful job and deserve a hefty amount of credit for the record-breaking season as do our brilliant owners, both our long-standing clients and those that joined us this season, for their amazing support that keeps Ellerton Zahra Racing among the best in the business in Victoria.
