Ellerton Zahra Racing’s terrific season produced an industry accolade at the Victorian racing awards ceremony at Crown Casino in Melbourne.

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra prepared a stable record of 73 wins for the 2014/15 season to finish among the best-performed operations in Victoria.

The impressive numbers produced earnings of more than $2.53 million for the season, part of which won the Flemington stable the Super VOBIS Trainer of the Year Award.

Ellerton and Zahra earned the award for winning the highest tally of Victorian Owner and Breeder Incentive Scheme bonus money with their team during the season.

Smart three-year-old Rough Justice led the charge when he shared the VOBIS Horse of the Year Award with the Robert Smerdon-trained Fontein Ruby.

Rough Justice campaigned strongly in Melbourne throughout the season with his two city wins helping him earn more than $63,000 in VOBIS bonuses.

Handy performers Von Classic Hero ($36,800), Propelled ($38,000) and Mrs President ($14,000) earned metropolitan Super VOBIS bonuses while a host of winners did the same on the provincial circuit.

“We’ve had a really good season with the VOBIS-qualified horses,” Zahra said.

“We were able to get the right horses into the season and keep them at or near their best in multiple preparations.

“A lot of the credit has to go to the staff for the job they did with all of the horses but we also thank all our owners for their support yet again.”
