Heatherly crushes opposition in Group 2 Rubiton Stakes
Feb 13, 2016
Hopes have turned to expectations for Heatherly’s connections after her terrific display of speed in Saturday’s Group II Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.
Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra decided to test the three-year-old as an Oakleigh Plate contender in the Rubiton Stakes before the daughter of Lonhro answered their inquiry with a dominant win.
Jockey Katelyn Mallyon let Heatherly use her natural pace from the barriers. Allowing the filly to stride to the front before Heatherly extended her margin in the straight under her 51kg handicap, scoring by 5-½ lengths.
"She just relaxes perfectly now, gets into a rhythm and breathes right. She had her ears pricked on the corner because she was going so well,” Zahra said.
"We’ve said the whole time she’s an excellent filly but now she’s putting it all together. She’s sound and enjoying her racing and now we’re seeing what she’s always shown.
"It’s just been a bit of taking the time to let her mature.”
Mallyon trialled Heatherly as a young horse but said fellow rider Damian Lane’s work on the sprinter in conjunction with Ellerton and Zahra had made a huge difference to her racing manners.
"They’ve done a really good job trying to settle her down because she was such a fierce filly,” Mallyon said.
"The ear muffs have helped her switch off early but she’s really come into her own now and she felt lovely today.”
Heatherly will get her chance for a Group I win when the Oakleigh Plate is run at Caulfield on February 27.
Heatherly’s brilliant win was her third in succession and took her stakes tally to more than $275,000.
Congratulations to Heatherly’s owners Barrie and Midge Griffiths and all involved with her amazing win.
