Girls going after Group 2 events at Caulfield

Feb 11, 2016

Leaving well enough alone could pay off for trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra when classy two-year-old Sword Of Light attempts to remain unbeaten at Caulfield.

Sword Of Light has notched two wins from as many starts but a barrier meltdown forced her scratching from a race at Flemington last month before she bounced back with a win in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Caulfield on January 26.

Sword Of Light had a better experience in the gates before her last win after the Flemington trainers added earmuffs to the New Approach filly’s gear. Ellerton and Zahra decided against trying further remedial work on Sword Of Light’s barrier habits.

“The ear muffs have made the world of difference to her. She’s a lot more settled and doing everything right,” Zahra said.

“When you get a filly that has had a bit of problem in the gates, you try not to overdo the barrier stuff with them so you don’t flip them over the edge.

“She had a good experience last time and hopefully, she’s learned from that.”

Pacy three-year-old Heatherly will attempt to extend her winning run to three when she takes on the older horses in the Group II Rubiton Stakes (1100m).

The Rubiton Stakes will serve as a test run for the Group I Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 27 but Zahra said the daughter of Lonhro had a few things in her favour for Saturday’s assignment.

“She’s drawn (barrier) three, she’s got 51(kg) and she really goes well for Katelyn (Mallyon),” Zahra said. “Katelyn knows her well and she just runs for her.

“She looks the best I’ve ever seen her look this time in. We’re very happy with the way she’s going.

“There are probably four or five chances in it and she’s one of them.”

Zahra believes six-year-old Pin Your Hopes was on the verge of his career best form and could notch his first win since May 2014 in the thebigscreencompany.com.au Handicap (1800m).

“Pin Your Hopes is going the best he’s ever gone. He’s starting to go like a stayer and he’s never been as sound as he is now,” Zahra said.

“He’s going terrific.”

Damian Lane will be aboard Pin Your Hopes and Sword Of Light.
