Tough Tempered gets the money again at Sandown

Dec 30, 2015

Temprered had to fight hard for a long way but he managed to complete back-to-back wins in his latest assignment at Sandown.

Tempered broke his maiden with a gritty on pace performance at Echuca on December 17 before posting another victory when stepping up to Benchmark 64 grade in the Polytrack Handicap (1600m).

Damian Lane was aboard Tempered in his Echuca success and stuck with the son of Hard Spun at Sandown with the jockey capitalising on barrier two to send the gelding to the front soon after the start.

Lane was able to set a slow tempo midrace before asking Tempered to work through his gears rounding the home turn but the four-year-old had company on his outside when the favourite Recalcitrata moved up to join him approaching the 300m.

However, Tempered relished the competition, matching Recalcitrata’s surge at the 200m before outslugging the runner-up to get home by a nose to notch his second win at his seventh start.

“He was able to run things to suit himself midrace but there was so much to like about the way he fought it out,” Simon Zahra, who trains Tempered in partnership with Mathew Ellerton, said.

“The second horse had the whole straight to get past but Tempered refused to quit and that desire to win got him home.

“It was a terrific win.”

Tempered gave Ellerton Zahra Racing and great stable supporters Contract Racing a double at Sandown after Katelyn Mallyon notched a special win aboard Miss Cooper earlier in the day.

Mallyon outrode her claim when she rode her 80th winner when Miss Cooper raced on the pace throughout to score her second city victory.

Congratulations to the owners of both winners and all involved with the stable’s double at Sandown.
