Chilean Wonder emerges as staying prospect at Echuca
Dec 17, 2015
Chilean Wonder’s steady improvement culminated in yet another December success for Ellerton Zahra Racing at Echuca.
The First Light Racing-syndicated galloper became Ellerton Zahra’s 13th winner of the month when he strode to a dominant victory in the American Hotel Echuca Plate (2100m).
The three-year-old finished second over 1850m at Kyneton before leading when a solid fifth at Mornington before breaking through for trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra at Echuca.
In-form jockey Damian Lane headed to Echuca to partner the son of Host in the $23,000 contest and the result was in little doubt once the gelding began well from barrier two.
Lane let Chilean Wonder travel sweetly behind the leader before the rider allowed the promising galloper to stride forward to challenge the front-runner approaching the home turn.
Chilean Wonder always looked likely to gain the advantage in the straight before running out the 2100m strongly to record a soft 1-¼ length win.
“He’s just got better as we have stepped him up in ground and he was going to win a long way out,” Zahra said.
“He’s thrived on the work we have given him and he’s just getting better with every run.
“Now he’s shown he’s got good staying ability, he can continue to develop and perhaps get out over further.”
Chilean Wonder’s maiden win earned connections $18,950 in stakes and bonuses, taking his prizemoney tally to more than $30,000.
Congratulations to Chilean Wonder’s terrific band of owners and all involved with his maiden victory.
