Rare Callow ride produces a Mornington victory
Apr 16, 2018
Noel Callow doesn’t ride for Ellerton Zahra Racing often but the jockey gave Mieszko the right trip to break his maiden in the Ladbrokes Maiden Plate (1500m) at Mornington.
Callow won three Group races on the grand Mathew Ellerton-trained galloper Casual Pass more than a decade ago and showed his ability to get horses to run for him aboard Mieszko.
Drawing barrier 11 consigned Mieszko to racing wide for the entire 1500m of the $22,000 race but the son of Magnus was always travelling well for Callow.
Callow urged Mieszko to work through his gears from the 600m before the gelding worked to his top at the 200m, over-running the leaders late to score by 1 ½ lengths.
Callow said he was confident of winning on Mieszko a fair way from home.
“From the half-mile I was four-deep but happy and he just kept building,” Callow said. “On the turn I thought I had them because he just kept building.
“He’s a nice stayer in the making I think because when he got to the front, he didn’t know what was going on.”
Callow said he expected Mieszko would continue to improve with racing and more ground in coming preparations, which should lead to a few more wins for connections.
Mieszko earned $20,500 in prizemoney and bonuses for his maiden win, which came at his seventh start.
Congratulations to Mieszko’s owners and all involved with the promising stayer’s maiden success.
